Why do takeaway coffee lids have two holes?

A disposable coffee cup lid usually has two holes in it. There is a sip-thru hole to drink out of and a second hole to allow the steam to escape from the cup. This second hole helps to prevent the cup from melting as well as stopping the contents from retaining too much heat, otherwise, the steam would escape via the sip-thru hole, increasing the likelihood of scalding the drinker.
